Vehicle Description
Like MG before him, Donald Healey used ordinary, readily available Austin and Morris components to make this 11ft 9in long two-seater, the Mark I Sprite, or ‘Frogeye’. The original Austin-Healey Sprite was an inexpensive and cheerful sports car that appealed to enthusiasts all over the world. Those ‘frogeye’ headlamps were initially planned to be retractable until it was realised that would put the price up – and retaining them in that position proved to be an inspired decision. Due to its low weight, it was still an entertaining car to drive with reasonable performance – and sold at a bargain price. Some of it was quite advanced, with a semi-monocoque body, but the ride on leaf springs and the gastrapodic, 43bhp A35 engine spoke of post-war austerity – by now, most have been uprated with tuned Mini engines.
